Emma chose a table with an excellent view of the bar and could feel Alexâs disapproving eyes boring into her skull as she read the menu.
âPlease tell me that you are not still interested in John,â Alex said.
âWhy on earth would you say that?â Emma said. âYou and I both know that ship sailed a long time ago.â
âIs that right,â Alex said, âbecause you couldnât be more obvious if you tried. You were one step away from licking his face when I walked in.â
âI was doing no such thing,â Emma said. âMy only interest in John is those green fingers of his.â
âLiar,â Alex said.
âExcuse me?â
âIâm not blind, Emma, and neither is anyone else. Itâs painfully obvious that youâre still in love with him, and if itâs obvious to me you can be damn sure itâs obvious to John.â
Letâs hope so, thought Emma. She sighed and put the menu down. âI think youâre seeing something that isnât there,â she said. âCan we drop this ridiculous line of conversation and order some food?â
âNo, we canât,â Alex said. âYou can act as innocent as you like, but I know you. Youâre up to something.â
âWell then I donât think you know me very well at all,â Emma said. âAnd Iâm sure you have much better things to do than worry about me.â
âWhy did you invite John to dinner?â
Emma risked a small glance towards the bar. âTo discuss work,â she said. âHe is my gardener, or havenât you noticed?â
Alex glared across the table. âPlease tell me you didnât buy a basket full of aphrodisiacs for John.â
âNow youâre just being absurd,â Emma said. âI told you what those purchases were for. I have no romantic interest in John, or anyone else for that matter. Now can we please drop this ridiculous line of questioning, or would you prefer to dine alone?â
Alex sat back in her chair. âFine,â she said, âIâll drop it, but only if you promise not to interfere between John and Rae.â
Emma felt her stomach drop. âWhat on earth are you talking about?â
âI saw the way you looked at Dee when she mentioned them. If looks could kill weâd be visiting Dee in the morgue right now.â
âWell you might be visiting her, I certainly wouldnât.â
âYou know what I mean. Promise me you wonât hassle Rae.â
âAlexandra, I have never hassled anyone in my life. If that girl chooses to hang around John like a lovesick teenager then it is of no interest to me.â
âSo, youâve noticed them together then?â
âThatâs not what I said. Donât try to put words in my mouth. Now do you think itâs possible we could change the subject. If Iâd known I was coming here for an interrogation I really wouldnât have bothered.â
Alex narrowed her eyes. âOK then,â she said. âConsider it dropped for now. But I still donât believe you.â
âHallelujah,â Emma said, âIâll try not to lose any sleep over it.â
