Emma chose a table with an excellent view of the bar and could feel Alex’s disapproving eyes boring into her skull as she read the menu.

‘Please tell me that you are not still interested in John,’ Alex said.

‘Why on earth would you say that?’ Emma said. ‘You and I both know that ship sailed a long time ago.’

‘Is that right,’ Alex said, ‘because you couldn’t be more obvious if you tried. You were one step away from licking his face when I walked in.’

‘I was doing no such thing,’ Emma said. ‘My only interest in John is those green fingers of his.’

‘Liar,’ Alex said.

‘Excuse me?’

‘I’m not blind, Emma, and neither is anyone else. It’s painfully obvious that you’re still in love with him, and if it’s obvious to me you can be damn sure it’s obvious to John.’

Let’s hope so, thought Emma. She sighed and put the menu down. ‘I think you’re seeing something that isn’t there,’ she said. ‘Can we drop this ridiculous line of conversation and order some food?’

‘No, we can’t,’ Alex said. ‘You can act as innocent as you like, but I know you. You’re up to something.’

‘Well then I don’t think you know me very well at all,’ Emma said. ‘And I’m sure you have much better things to do than worry about me.’

‘Why did you invite John to dinner?’

Emma risked a small glance towards the bar. ‘To discuss work,’ she said. ‘He is my gardener, or haven’t you noticed?’

Alex glared across the table. ‘Please tell me you didn’t buy a basket full of aphrodisiacs for John.’

‘Now you’re just being absurd,’ Emma said. ‘I told you what those purchases were for. I have no romantic interest in John, or anyone else for that matter. Now can we please drop this ridiculous line of questioning, or would you prefer to dine alone?’

Alex sat back in her chair. ‘Fine,’ she said, ‘I’ll drop it, but only if you promise not to interfere between John and Rae.’

Emma felt her stomach drop. ‘What on earth are you talking about?’

‘I saw the way you looked at Dee when she mentioned them. If looks could kill we’d be visiting Dee in the morgue right now.’

‘Well you might be visiting her, I certainly wouldn’t.’

‘You know what I mean. Promise me you won’t hassle Rae.’

‘Alexandra, I have never hassled anyone in my life. If that girl chooses to hang around John like a lovesick teenager then it is of no interest to me.’

‘So, you’ve noticed them together then?’

‘That’s not what I said. Don’t try to put words in my mouth. Now do you think it’s possible we could change the subject. If I’d known I was coming here for an interrogation I really wouldn’t have bothered.’

Alex narrowed her eyes. ‘OK then,’ she said. ‘Consider it dropped for now. But I still don’t believe you.’

‘Hallelujah,’ Emma said, ‘I’ll try not to lose any sleep over it.’
